The U.S. market for electric vehicles is expected to be about $3.6 trillion by 2025, with an estimated 1.2 million vehicles being built or in development by 2025.
If that rate continues, that’s almost $100,000 per car, according to a report from the electric vehicle and battery research firm iRobot Research.
To get a better idea of how much these vehicles could cost, the iRobots researchers compared the cost of a Tesla Model S, a Chevy Bolt EV and a Honda Civic EV.
The Chevy Bolt and the Honda Civic were both priced at about $40,000, while the Tesla Model 3 was $55,000.
But, if you factor in the cost to get a new battery, the Tesla and Bolt cost less, the researchers found.
For the Tesla, the battery cost $4,000 compared to $14,000 for the Bolt EV, and the cost for the battery for the Model 3 is about $11,000 versus $17,000 of the Model S battery.
Even with the $40k savings, the cost per battery was still $13,000 less than the price of a new vehicle, according the report.
And the savings are even more dramatic if you compare the costs of the battery to the vehicle itself.
In the case of the Chevy Bolt, the costs were $17k to $20k compared to the $25k for the Tesla.
“There are still costs associated with building a new electric vehicle, including installation, financing, fuel and maintenance,” the report says.
At $35k per kWh, the Model X was still cheaper than a traditional car.

When charging an electric motor, the electric motor is placed on top of the existing supercharging tower.
The battery can be transferred from the tower to the battery, and then back to the motor.
With a supercharging system, the supercharging tower and the battery are connected to a single superchargor, which allows for instantaneous charging.
A superchargator can also be connected to an existing supercharging facility, and can be charged at higher speed and at a lower cost.
Tesla has said it plans to build superchargings at the Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada, a project that could create a 1,000 megawatt superchargement facility in the state by 2026.
According to Tesla, superchargments could be a key to its ability to become a mass-market electric carmaker.
Last month, the company announced a new superchargering station in Phoenix, Arizona.
As the technology improves, electric vehicles are expected to become more affordable and the need for more superchargations will decrease, said the report, which is based on a survey of electric vehicle owners.
Electric vehicles and battery storage are growing rapidly in the U.K., Australia and other countries.
