A child’s gender identity is a spectrum.
There are some who identify as male or female, some who feel more feminine and others who are neither.
Some feel they have a male or a female voice.
They have a penis and testicles.
Some prefer to wear dresses and wear makeup.
Some are transvestites.
Some children who feel like they are a boy or girl, but are not, may have genital surgery or hormone therapy to change their body.
Some may also have surgeries or other medical procedures that can alter their sex characteristics.
If you or a loved one are concerned about a child who may feel like he or she does not match your gender identity, call the National Center for Transgender Equality at (866) 821-1727.
